Smart Banner

Smart Banner lets you link visitors from an onsite experience directly into your mobile app.

When a visitor clicks the banner:

  • If the app is installed, the app opens on the matching page.

  • If the app isn't installed, the visitor is redirected to the App Store or Google Play.

Smart Banner links to a page set up for iOS Universal Links and Android App Links. If the app is installed, the phone opens it on that page; otherwise, the visitor is sent to the App Store or Google Play

The Smart Banner feature is still in BETA and is available only upon request. Contact your Customer Success Manager to get access.

Before you start

To set up Smart Banner, you will need:

  • An app published in the Apple App Store and/or Google Play

  • Access to update and release your mobile app

  • Access to your website and DNS configuration

  • A dedicated HTTPS link domain, for example link.example.com

  • The Triggerbee script installed on your website

The setup requires changes from both your app developers and web team.

1. Configure the mobile app

Your app must be configured to claim the link domain and handle incoming links.

Android

Your app developer needs to:

  • Configure Android App Links with autoVerify for your link domain, for example link.example.com.

  • Declare your website domains, for example shop.example.com and www.example.com, in asset_statements. This is recommended and allows Smart Banner to detect whether the app is installed.

  • Configure the app to open the matching screen for each incoming link.

  • Provide your web team with the app's SHA-256 certificate fingerprint. If you use Google Play App Signing, this can be found under Play Console → App signing.

These changes require a new release of the Android app.

iOS

Your app developer needs to:

  • Enable the Associated Domains capability.

  • Add your link domain using the applinks: service, for example:

applinks:link.example.com

  • Configure the app to open the matching screen for each incoming link.

  • Provide your web team with your Apple Team ID.

These changes require a new release of the iOS app.

2. Set up the link domain

Your web team needs to create a dedicated HTTPS subdomain, for example:

link.example.com

This domain is used as the bridge between your website and mobile app.

The following verification files must be hosted on the domain.

Android

Host:

/.well-known/assetlinks.json

This file associates the link domain with your Android app and uses information including your package name and SHA-256 certificate fingerprint.

The file must be accessible over HTTPS without redirects.

iOS

Host:

/.well-known/apple-app-site-association

This file associates the link domain with your iOS app and uses information including your Apple Team ID and app identifier.

The file must be accessible over HTTPS without redirects.

3. Set up the fallback pages

Each Smart Banner link should point to a page on your link domain.

For example:

https://link.example.com/products/product-a

If the app has claimed the domain and is installed, the operating system opens the corresponding page or screen in the app.

If the app isn't installed, the URL opens as a regular web page instead.

The fallback page must include the Triggerbee script. Triggerbee can then redirect the visitor to the appropriate App Store or Google Play listing.

4. Configure your website for Android

After the updated app has been released, we recommend adding a web app manifest to your main website domains that lists your Android app.

For example, this may apply to both:

shop.example.com
www.example.com

Together with the asset_statements configuration in the Android app, this allows Smart Banner to recognize the relationship between your website and app and improves the Android experience, including opening Google Play directly when appropriate.

5. Send your app IDs to Triggerbee

Finally, provide Triggerbee with your app's store information:

  • Apple App Store ID, for example 6736515500

  • Google Play package ID, for example com.example.app

Triggerbee will configure these IDs for Smart Banner so visitors without the app can be sent to the correct store.

Setup checklist

Before using Smart Banner, make sure:

  • The iOS app has Associated Domains configured for the link domain.

  • The Android app has App Links with autoVerify configured for the link domain.

  • The Android app declares the website domains in asset_statements.

  • The app handles incoming links and opens the corresponding screen.

  • The dedicated link domain is available over HTTPS.

  • assetlinks.json is published without redirects.

  • apple-app-site-association is published without redirects.

  • The fallback pages contain the Triggerbee script.

  • The website has a web manifest listing the Android app (recommended).

  • Triggerbee has your App Store ID and Google Play package ID.

Once these steps are complete, you can use Smart Banner to create onsite experiences that take visitors directly from your website into your app, with an automatic app store fallback for visitors who don't have the app installed.
